The Overband Magnetic Separator serves the purpose of removing ferromagnetic particles from sand. It is virtually a static suspension of a permanent magnet, rectangle in shape, placed between the top and bottom belt of a small belt conveyor. This small belt conveyor along with magnet is normally placed on top of a return Sand Belt Conveyor. The small Belt Conveyor is placed either at right angle to the main belt conveyor or, installed near drive pulley of the main conveyor. A gap of 150 to 200 min. is maintained between top of main belt and bottom of small belt.
When the Belt Conveyors run and the main conveyor carries foundry sand, any iron particles mixed in the sand are picked up by the magnetic force and iron particles stick to the bottom belt of the small conveyor. Because of the movement of the belt, the iron particles come beyond the magnetic field and fall outside the main conveyor and iron particles are collected in a bin through an inclined chute.
